United Nations Restores Sanctions Against Iran

Release Date:

As of September 27, 2025, the reinstatement mechanism provided for in United Nations Security Council Resolution 2231 (2015) has been triggered, resulting in the full re-activation of the sanctions previously imposed on the Islamic Republic of Iran between 2006 and 2010.

In an official notification submitted in August 2025 by the United Kingdom, France and Germany, it was indicated that Iran had materially failed to comply with the terms of the Joint Comprehensive Plan of Action (JCPOA). On this basis, the sanctions whose implementation had been suspended were restored. Consequently, the provisions of Security Council Resolutions 1696 (2006), 1737 (2006), 1747 (2007), 1803 (2008), 1835 (2008) and 1929 (2010) have been reinstated in their original form. At the same time, paragraphs 7, 8 and 16–20 of Resolution 2231 have been terminated.

The restored sanctions encompass comprehensive restrictions in areas including the arms embargo, missile-related activities, and financial and economic sectors.

As is well established, under the Charter of the United Nations, compliance with Security Council sanctions is mandatory for all Member States.
